The Year of the Goat
Why would two people and a dog leave behind their New York lives to scour the country for goats? You'll find the answer to that question, plus probably more than you ever wanted to learn about goats at www.yearofthegoat.net

My Photoblog: Schatz Shots
This photoblog will be a mix of new and old photographs and the stories behind them. I have a lot of work from the past 12 years that I've never really done anything with, and I figured it's about time to get it out in the world. Feel free to leave your comments about the photographs that you see. Tell me which one's you like, and what you'd like to see more of...

Karl & Margaret's Trip to South Africa
In May 2003, Margaret and I went to South Africa to visit my sister Enid.
To say it was amazing is an understatement. We flew into Johannesburg, went on to Kruger National Park, and finished the trip in Cape Town. I shot 27 rolls of film in 8 days. Here are some of those photos.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation:
13 National Parks, Monuments, & Forests in 31 days

In August of 1997 I packed up my father's GMC Jimmy and headed cross-country. I drove over 10,000 miles to visit, camp in, and explore some of our nation's most beautiful places and natural wonders. I made it all the way to the Pacific, turned around and came back. It was one of the most amazing months of my life. There are three different ways you can find out about this fantastic trip.
  • Travelogue: A day by day account of the trip with links to stories and photographs of the many sights I saw and places I stayed.
  • Map: shows the route I took cross-country with links to Parks and Monuments.
  • Thumbnails: A grid of my black and white photography from the trip.

A Jewish School in Warsaw
In 1994 The Ronald S. Lauder foundation opened the first Jewish School in Poland in over 25 years. This is the story of the teachers, parents and students who made this historic event in the saga of Eastern European Jewry possible.

A Culture Rekindled: Jewish Traditions Return to Russia
From September of 1992 until July of 1993, while living in Moscow, I undertook to document the remarkable changes taking place in Jewish communities all over Russia. Back in the U.S. the project became a Jewish calendar that I designed and self-published, with the goal of raising money to help rebuild Jewish communities in Russia
